Superior Police investigated two suspicious looking items along Hammond Avenue Wednesday evening.

Just after 6:10 p.m., officers were made aware of a suspicious item, a 6-inch plastic cylinder with wires extending from it, on the sidewalk of the 800 block of Hammond Avenue according to a report from the Superior Police Department. Officers located a second item, a 4 by 4 inch metal box with copper wiring as well. The second item was located in the northbound traffic lane of the same block.

Police blocked traffic to the section of Hammond Avenue due to the uncertainty of the origin of the items and halted rail traffic in the area. A tactical team was deployed, along with a Duluth Police Department explosive detection dog, to investigate.

At this time, the items have been identified as components commonly used in high-powered sodium lights. Superior Police thanked the public for their patience while the investigation was underway.

"While the risk to the public was very low, we appreciate everyone giving us the wiggle room to resolve this matter safely," read a statement from Superior Police.
